Buru Beltza (Black Heads)

Buru Beltza (Têtes noires or Black Heads) is published by éditions sun/sun and regroups years of research by the photographer Hélène David. It was clear for us by understanding the nature of this work that this publication should escape the usual bound books. By using layers and a most basic binding method 3 holes and a red thread: the format of the book starts to look like tectonic plates shaping a malleable landscape that is open for interaction. Not a final study but spaces that call again and again for touching, movement and interpretation.

On the backcover it writes:
Here, the soil is skin, a fertile space of porous boundaries between animals, humans, mountains, plants, rivers, ancestors, and meteors. Peasant voices and bodies emerge. Here, the Basque Country. Photographs, archival material, and collected testimonies—these fragments of reality come together in 12 polyphonies +1 to weave an imaginary score. Here, the worlds of the visible and the invisible, the buried and the surface, coalesce in a cycle of life and death. Buru Beltza thus sketches a geopoetics of the territory and offers a visceral perspective on a peasant way of inhabiting the land. Here, an echo of the doubts that punctuate our contemporary worlds in other geographies.
